Some call it ‘trans-national’ couples, ‘expat’ couples, ‘mixed’ couples or ‘inter-racial’ couples. I am referring to a couples from different countries and cultures.

My ethnic background is the Caribbean whilst my husband’s ethnic background is Nigeria. We both come from two different rich cultural backgrounds. At the beginning of our relationship, we noticed some clashes between us in the way we looked at different situations, our taste in food, language barriers and the list goes on. We were presented with a situation where we both had to grow in understanding, patience, empathy and respect.

The most essential thing we learned very fast is the importance of respecting each other’s cultural differences, working collaboratively and incorporating both cultures in the kitchen (cooking) and everyday life. One culture should not be forced more than the other, neither should one be more prevalent, there should be balance. Having said so, I would recommend that you do what works best for your home. For example, in your home, it may work well for one culture to be more prevalent than the other.

Are you in a inter-racial relationship or marriage? Is your husband or wife from a different race, culture or ethnic background to you? What are some of the challenges you have both faced along the way and how have you been able to overcome them?
